Post 16 Education at Thornton
Thornton
Grammar School provides very high quality Post 16 provision; our GCE
"A" level results have for a significant number of years been amongst
the highest in Bradford. Our latest OfSTED inspection (2007) stated "At
GCE A Level pass rates are at the national average". This represents
significant improvements in standards since 2005. The report went on to
say "The sixth form curriculum is outstanding and offers a very wide
range of subject choices. Enrolement procedures are good as are guidance
and induction procedures. Sixth formers play a very active and valued
role in mentoring younger students." Post 16 education at Thornton is
the place to be, make sure that you do not miss out.
A Message from the Director of Post 16 Studies
Post-16 education is an exciting but demanding challenge, and it is vital that students and parents give careful thought to selecting the right course. An informed choice means students settle quickly and enjoy the rigours of their area of study. A number of important considerations should be addressed:
- What are the academic requirements of my future career?
- Have I the ability to work at my chosen level and subjects?
- Have I sought adequate careers advice and spoken to my subject tutors about my long-term prospects?
- Do I have the appropriate entry qualifications to embark on the course of my choice?
Having addressed these issues students are ready to enter the Sixth Form at Thornton Grammar School, where opportunities await them to extend and improve their academic qualifications through a full and varied range of GCE, Applied GCE and BTEC courses, giving students a realistic opportunity to build on their Year 11 success. The traditional virtues of scholarship and study are complemented by the opportunity for young people to grow in maturity. Sixth Form students work extremely hard to achieve the necessary qualifications, which helps them develop a responsible attitude to the greater freedom they experience in organising their own learning. Successful Sixth Formers emerge not only as well-qualified students able to proceed to Higher/Further Education or professional employment, but also as mature adults ready to accept their responsibilities in society. Our aim is to produce, within a caring atmosphere, wellrounded individuals with the highest levels of achievement, so that Sixth Formers leaving Thornton Grammar will be fully equipped – physically, intellectually, morally and socially – to meet with confidence the ever-changing demands of the modern world.

Sporting and Recreational Activities
We run a full range of extra-curricular sporting and recreational clubs each day. We advertise these clubs on the PE Corridor on A Floor and within the Recreation Centre. In September we will publish a list of clubs available on the web site. We have an "open door" policy and encourage studnets to just turn up and give things a go. Clubs finish at around 4.00pm with the sweeper bus departing at 4.15pm (details of the route are in the New Pupil Handbook). If playing representative sport fixtures tend to finish later than 4.15pm, it could be as late as 6.00pm. If your son/daughter is selected to represent the school then they will be informed of the times and dates in advance so arrangements can be made for collection from school. All clubs are free apart from the junior membership of the fitness suite. Details of junior membership can be found at the recreation centre.
